Unit 11 Reading Notes

I'm a little confused after mention of readings being out of order, I don't know if I missed the memo or something, but here are my reading notes for Unit 11 as Blackboard has them listed for 11/24

Digital Libraries:
This article outlines some of the challenges as well as influential work behind the creation of digital libraries.  Some of the big institutions involved in the creation and organization in digital libraries were universities.  The initiative to create accessible digital libraries and repositories greatly influenced publishers into providing electronic journals and articles.  I think this is a great example of how libraries can take advantage of changing technologies to shape how information systems can provide information in a organized and accessible system.

Dewey Meets Turing:
This article addresses the Digital Library Initiative and the roles that both librarians and computer scientists took as collaborators of the project.  Its another example of how technologies could enhance libraries ability to provide access.  It also became a way for libraries to continue to impact and cater to the public as they changed the way they searched for information.  With users looking primarily to search engines such as google, it was important for libraries to implement similar digital searches as well as providing access to digital materials.

Association of Research Libraries
This article is about the trend of institutions to create digital repositories in which to preserve works by faculty and students.  With the increase in available storage space, more institutions are able to create their own repositories with the hope of expanding a reflective collection from their institution.  Its a way for institutions to support their faculty, however it does not replace publishing forms.  It seems that institutions should really consider the benefits of housing works by their own faculty who publish, especially with the rising costs of journal subscriptions.
